KARAT Coalition in cooperation with Clean Clothes Campaign is implementing a project on ‘Improving work conditions of women working in clothing factories in Poland’.

Clean Clothes Campaign is a coalition of NGOs, trade unions, and individuals acting in 11 European countries for the improvement of working conditions in the global garment industry. CCC monitors the working conditions in garment factories, organizes consumer campaigns for the boycott of those textile brands which production involves human rights violation. CCC also supports worker and mobilizes trade unions in their struggle for changing such situation.

The improving work conditions project is a continuation of research conducted by KARAT Coalition and CCC in a 4 Polish garment factories in 2004. It involves further research on the work conditions of women working in garment industry and investigates the observance of ILO standards related to: discrimination in employment, forced labour, child labour, excessive working hours, living wages, security of employment, occupational health and safety etc. Additionally, as part of the project a data base of the workplaces braking the ILO standards is being developed.

The long term objective of the project is improvement of the working conditions of women employed in garment industry as well as improvement of their negotiating skills, self esteem and capacity. The project is also aimed at increasing of the public awareness and disapproval of the conditions in which clothes are made in Poland.

In order to achieve this, the results of the research conducted during the project will be publicized through media as well as used by the coalition which will be created as a part of the project and will act to change the existing situation, and which would involve various NGOs, trade unions and individuals.

The results of the research will be available as soon as they are published.
